A coat of mascara is frequently used as the final touch to eye-opening eyeliner and/or coloured eyeshadow. While the lifting and volumizing tool may absolutely help you achieve a more youthful makeup appearance, there are four errors you could be doing that could have the opposite impact. With that in mind, we spoke with professional makeup artists Mary Winkenwerder and Alyssia Chang, founder of Prevail Beauty, to discover more about crucial mascara mistakes to avoid if you want to appear younger!
Mistake #1: Using Older or Expired Mascara
Chang claims that using an outdated or expired product is the simplest method to get an undesirable clumpy appearance. “Mascara formulations are continuously being updated and improved,” Chang says, “so if you’ve been using the same mascara for years, it’s time to vary things up.” “Newer mascaras frequently have more staying power and can give your lashes a fuller, more voluminous appearance,” she explains.
Many cosmetic gurus recommend reassessing your eye makeup every 3-6 months and changing it if it begins to clump or produces a flatter or less voluminous impression when applied.
Mistake #2— Forgetting To Curl Your Lashes First
When it comes to sky-high lashes, eyelash curlers are mascara’s greatest friend, according to Chang. Failure to utilise this instrument before applying mascara might result in the drooping appearance you want to avoid. Chang notes that “many ladies make the error of not curling their lashes before applying mascara.”
According to her, this can “give your lashes a drooping, downward-facing aspect, making you seem fatigued and old.” “Curling your lashes with an eyelash curler before applying mascara can help give them a more lifted look,” she says.
Mistake #3— Not Applying Mascara Evenly (or Adding Too Much!)
According to Winkenwerder, the greatest anti-aging mascara looks are equally distributed, not clumpy, and subtle. “Rich mascara declarations are stunning, and they require a patient touch to produce,” she explains. “When applying mascara, take your time so that just enough is applied to the proper locations,” she advises. Winkenwerder recommends gently coating the lashes for this. “Build mascara volume carefully with a clean wand and leave it to set for around 5 to 10 minutes before starting your day,” she says.
She emphasises that using too much mascara at once causes lashes to “appear uneven,” even if they are “naturally big” and healthy. Winkenwerder advises using a clean wand to “ensure the lashes are uniformly covered with mascara, one coat at a time.” Evenly applied mascara seems “healthy,” and “create volume with mascara one step at a time for dynamic lash statements” can make your lashes look much better.
Mistake #4— Sleeping In Your Mascara
The most important mistake to avoid when it comes to eye makeup is sleeping in it or not completely removing it before hitting the mattress. This, according to Chang, can result in increased wrinkles, dark under-eye circles, and blocked pores, among other problems. “During the night, mascara may easily clump and flake off, leaving you with raccoon eyes and microorganisms on your skin,” she says.
“This can cause your skin to age and make you appear much older than you are,” she says. Chang concludes that “using a decent makeup remover and taking the time to gently remove all traces of mascara before going to bed is always vital.
