On September 28, Laverne Cox wore an elaborate Iris van Herpen gown to the New York City Ballet’s annual autumn fashion gala. The “Inventing Anna” actor chose the ensemble from the Dutch designer’s 2017 couture collection after anchoring the Emmys red carpet in 2022. The gown was made of silver, wire-like material and included dozens of razor-sharp cuts that provided a see-through impression. The avant-garde piece, which was sleeveless with a high neckline and an asymmetrical skirt, fit Cox like it was specifically created to embrace her contours.

Cox accessorised with transparent pointed-toe shoes, geometric diamond Dries Criel earrings, and Kismet by Milka rings, styled by Christina Joy Pacelli. The genuine showpiece was the chrome purse she wore to the ceremony. The small purse was designed by Published By, an Austrian business, and was formed like a huge reflecting stone, with a built-in top handle and an extra leather strap. The one-of-a-kind item wonderfully suited Cox’s futuristic design.

Cox expressed her thanks after the dinner for the opportunity to wear one of van Herpen’s renowned creations for the evening. “As a long time admirer of @irisvanherpen, I’m pleased and humbled to have gotten to wear an Iris design to the ballet last night,” she posted on Instagram. “This is truly where fashion and art collide.

Cox was in good company at the midweek event, which honoured NYC Ballet Vice Chair Sarah Jessica Parker as well as prominent fashion designers and choreographers. Julia Fox wore a foil-effect Zac Posen gown with voluminous sleeves and a sweeping train on the red carpet, while Billy Porter wore an antique Giles Deacon gown with platform shoes. Solange Knowles, Queen Latifah, Kristin Davis, and Gwendoline Christie were among those who attended.
