Selena Gomez recently served up old Hollywood elegance at the Emmys, proving that classics never go out of style, particularly on the red carpet. Only Murders In The Building, the star’s Hulu series, was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series. She walked the red carpet in a white beaded Celine halter neck gown designed by Kate Young. The ensemble was a lesson in minimalist glamour, with hanging emerald earrings by Boucheron and a sparkling ring.

A bright complexion developed by celebrity makeup artist Melissa Murdick was the ideal compliment to her classic glam. The goal was not to make it too complicated—simplifying cosmetics was one of the main focuses, Murdick tells Vogue. In such spirit, skin preparation was crucial. To begin, she used a pore-diffusing primer on Gomez’s T-zone to reduce shine. Then, beneath a layer of foundation, Rare Beauty’s Light Liquid Luminizer Highlight was applied to the high points of the face (think: cheekbones, temples, and the bridge of the nose) to build radiance, followed by a spritz of face mist. “All of this goes below foundation because it creates a glow that appears to be coming from within, rather than sitting on top and being really glittery,” she explains. Murdick then set the T-zone with loose powder.
