Dresses are a staple in our year-round collections since they can be worn from work to the weekend and beyond. A fantastic dress can make us feel invincible and exceptional, and its influence can never be ignored. A wonderful dress can be reliable, elegant, and versatile—easy to dress up or down.
There are lots of elegant and appealing dress trends to get excited about this fall. We rounded up the must-have styles to invest in this season as well as keeping you updated on the silhouettes that are starting to phase out (or we’re at least setting aside for a little while this season) after thoroughly analysing the fall/winter runways, seeing what’s trending on the fashion It crowd right now, and getting plenty of input from our Who What Wear editors.

Skip: Asymmetric Hems
Wear: Maxi Hemlines
While the Y2K trend has certainly brought back uneven hemlines in recent seasons, this fall is all about long maxi-length fashions in straight and elegant forms.
Skip: Crazy Cutouts
Wear: Long, Silky Slip Dresses
Last fall/winter, there was an unbelievable amount of statement cutouts on the runways, and although we still love a nice cutout, we’re leaning into it a little less this season. Instead, we’re thinking about long, silky slip dresses. They were seen on the fall/winter 2022 runways, and we can’t wait to pair them with snug sweaters, boots, and leather bomber jackets once the weather cools.
The runways were dominated by charming and appealing sheer dresses in delicate thin materials in a pretty palette of pastels and neutral tones. There was also a lot of sheer sequins and iridescent shine. The look is youthful, lively, and feminine. Set aside your crochet dresses in favour of something a little more transparent.
Wear: ’90s Minimalist Silhouettes
Skip the ruffles and frills in favour of this season’s ’90s minimalism dresses, which range from tube forms to plain strapless versions. Ruffles had their day and place, but the silhouettes this season are exceptionally streamlined.
Wear: Animal Print
After a brief hiatus, animal-print dresses are making a comeback, as seen on the runways of Michael Kors and Proenza Schouler. Instead of gingham, choose a classic leopard or zebra print in a simple design.
